If I understand correctly, and I may be wrong, it is a real place and a real legend, but the whole thing about the kids going out in the woods with a camera is just a bad story.

No, but they sure played it up to seem that way. There was actually a "documentary" played on the sci-fi channel (I don't think it was the one mentioned above) just to help build the hype about it. Is that what you would call a "Mock-umentary"?
