You can't get mad at Mom, she deserves respect. You better be careful, she could smack you too if you aren't nice!

Because it is easy to direct feelings of hostility towards someone who we do not see as an individual, an who we cannot sympathize with. It is very easy to judge or come to harsh conclusions about people who we have no connection with or knowledge about. It is as if we do not see them as people, but as nuisances in the same way traffic or bad weather is. But if one finds that the "nuisance" is their mother, we can put that person into a human and individual context. We are aware of their intentions and can sympathize with them, so that anger yields to understanding and familiarity.
