Religious people like me, tend to think that God played an important role in making our planet the way it is.

If you aren't religious, then you probably think that after the previous star went supernova, it formed rings of mater around a mostly hydrogen core. Gravity caused a star to be born, and the rings of mater formed planets like Earth.

It could be something similar to a massive black hole.
