Is it possible to pierce your own belly button with a completely sanitized needle, gloves, antibiotic and a sterilized ring? I've read in a few places where people do not suggest doing that, or doing lip piercings yourself. When I was 15 I pierced my own lip with a safetey pin and some rubbing alcohol, i'm 21 now and it NEVER got infected and is still just fine today.

Sure. It's always possible to pierce anything on your body. People just prefer to go somewhere and have a professional do it for a few reasons. Some people can not take the pain or the feeling of actually piercings themselves. Others feel its more sterile and safer to have someone who has probably done it 100s of times. And, not to mention, it is expensive going somewhere to have it done! If a person can pierce themselves, why waste the money to have someone do it for them?

I've pierced my own belly button (the second hole, which I took out) and I've also pierced my ears several times which I still have and have never been infected. I've also pierced my brothers a few times.

Could you do it yourself? Sure if you want it to be crooked, and you have access to presterilized equipment. It is physically impossable to mark your own navel, and have it be straight, as a professional piercer I know I could not pierce my own navel straight even though I have pierced thousands of other navels straight. the fact of the matter is that when you raise your arm to mark the spot it will change the alignment of your body thus making what apears to be straight when your arm is raised actually crooked when you are standing straight with your arms at your side. So lets say you have someone else mark it and measure the jewelry for you, because you need to be in a complete straight line when it is marked for entry and exit points otherwise when you bend down to look at it the skin in that area bunches up thus causing the marks to be off, and the jewelry will actually be to short once you stand up resulting in the fresh piercing ripping the first time you stand up, unless you pierce it too shallow wich will inevitablly lead to rejection of the piercing. So you've had someone else mark it now your ready to pierce yourself with the appropriately sized 14 gauge needle, how are you going to see what your doing and still maintain the flat stomach that you need to have so you don't accidentally stab yourself in the nerve cluster located just above the navel area?
think about how your body will have to be in order to pierce it, sure you could do it standing up but you would still have to bend over to see what your doing especially since the bottom mark should be inside the navel on the top where you may never be able to see thus missing your mark anyway.
Now onto sterilization, hooray you were one of the lucky ones who didn't get an infection with your lip, but recognize that it was LUCK! The staph bacteria can live on any surface and alchol and peroxide don't even deter it, neither does boiling water or fire, what you need is to autoclave the equipment you will be using including the jewelry, needle, clamps, ring openers and closers. So lets say you don't care about the staph infection possability...well then go ahead but be warned that staph infections are the most common infections in self piercing and once in the body they can and usually do spread if they go untreated, though it is rare there are cases of people dying from staph infections that went untreated...so ask yourself do you really want to gamble with your life like that? It's not about only going to a professional to support my industry, on ebay you can order kits of pre-sterilized piercing equipment, so if you decide to self pierce then by all means order the pre-sterilized equipment. However it will cost you just as much if not more then going to a professional and getting it done right the first time.

Piercings are very inexpensive....why would you want to do it yourself when you can have it done in a clean, sanitized environment with the proper gauge needle.

The main advantage: a surgical, sharp needle. A safety pin, or even a piercing gun for that matter has a seemingly sharp, but realistically very dull edge. Why rip a hole in your skin when you can have a professional piercing needle make a clean one.

Overall...I don't see any advantage in doing this yourself, but if you do the least you can do is get a hold of a real piercing needle of the correct guage. Order one from a piercing store not ebay.

Dear Piercing girl,
Did the same thing to my belly-button, yes it is possible but for the best placement and the professional knowledge of avoiding major nerves, it is best to go to the professionals.
my piercing has sort of migrated to the very edge of the skin, like my body is trying to heal the scar tissue by pushing out the piercing. ?
Either way you decide to do this, just avoid using rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide in the piercing. The sensitive skin is susceptible to chemical burns.

In order to fit the standard gauge for most navel rings you should go have someone do it. The other problem would be since you have to go through a large portion of skin you would want a professional to make sure it was straight. It's not really expensive to do it. I think it cost me about $50 to have it done including the navel ring.

your navel is one of the most common places to get an infection after getting it pierced/piercing it. that's because it's one of the longest healing times after piercing. the only one that runs the same gammet is a nipple piercing. just because you were able to heal from your lip piercing well doesn't mean that it will be the same case w/ your navel. i would advise getting it done professionally. it's not that expensive and you can get the full lowdown on aftercare, etc.

Lucky you!
But theres is potential of bacterial infection. Usually piercing is done by professional who could keep up the sterialization in order. im advise that you do it thru professional, it will be more safer.

when i was in my early 20's I had a friend pierce my belly button for me and yes, it did get infected even tho she used everything that she should have. ... it is possible yes, but in all honesty, you probly should have had a professional do it just in case.

Of course it's possible but you should have a professional do it.

Just because yours didn't get infected doesn't mean that thousands of other people's didn't as well. There are always exceptions.

Yes, I'm sure it possible. I wouldn't suggest it, though. You seem to be impervious to pain since you pierced your own lip.
