Sorry, Jonah was swallowed by a fish, most people believe it was a whale.

There was a story about a Japanese whaler that was swallowed by a whale. When his co-workers landed the whale and were cutting it up, they found the man in the stomach but was totally white in color. Amazingly he was barely alive and did survive.

First of all, Jonah was swallowed by a whale. A whale is not a fish. As far as the fish thing...I'm pretty sure a shark or 2 have been reported as being removed from the sea with a whole human body inside them. Chewed up a bit...but nevertheless whole.

Not being swallowed by a fish or whale and living to tell about it.

Just a thought, one belief that's growing more and more popular among Christians is the idea that Jonah wasn't swallowed by just any ol' whale. They believe it was a special whale sent by God - and that somehow enabled him to survive in there as long as he did without being digested.

(Or, you could take the story as just symbolism, or a metaphor, too. Whatever.)

Okay, a video on youtube.com shows a fisherman getting eaten by a whale which burst through the ice. Was this real or one of those videos people seem to be making and putting on the internet? Personally, I don't think it is true after watching a show called "Caught On Camera" and how so many of these videos are made. Anyone know for sure????

Way back when, there were many fishermen and once in a while they might get swallowed -- or so I have been told. But they did not always survive.

Hi, everyone! The word correctly translated "great or large fish" in both the KJV and NIV is not the usual Hebrew word for "whale."
The more interesting word to me in Jonah 1:17 in both versions is translated "prepared" (KJV) and "provided" (NIV) and means "ordained," "commissioned," and "appointed." God ordained a very large fish, either by direct creation or using some "sea monster" to swallow Jonah. Just as God used natural locusts and frogs in great numbers with perfect timing as his plagues to punish the Egyptians for their stubbornness, so God commissioned a very large fish to snatch Jonah from death at the perfect time.
How do I know that Jonah's experience is historical? In Matthew 12:40, Jesus says that Jonah was the only sign that he would give, "For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." Of course, he was referring to the time he was in the tomb between his death for us and his resurrection for us. Jesus confirms God's miracles of Jonah's preservation in a large fish and of his own resurrection from the dead in order to give us eternal life through faith in him.
The reason that so many people think that it was a whale that swallowed Jonah is that the Latin word in that version originally meant fish, but over time it took on the meaning of whale. The KJV translation of the fish in Matthew 12:40 as a whale mistakenly took on that meaning. The NIV is more accurate according to the Hebrew in Jonah and the Greek in Matthew 12:40.
I hope that this long explanation helps you. Pastor Bruce Leiter.
