I have also read NBA champions being called "World Champions", too, which seems kinda stupid.

Anyway, I like calling soccer "football"; I think it will eventually overtake American football as "the football" in the US. Don't believe me? Ask the eight-year-olds which sport they like the most.

I think the term "soccer" came from the term "association football" which is what foorball was called in the US, England and elsewhere early in the 20th century. Since American football was also gaining popularity in the early 20th century, "soccer" was probably retained to distinguish the two.

When the World Series originated, (again, early 20th century) American baseball was the world of baseball. Some nomenclature endures due to tradition even when it's not quit accurate any longer.

I'll bet there are more than one American golfer or tennis player who consider the British Open and Wimbledon the unofficial "world championships" of their respective sport.

same reason we use inches instead of centimeters.

it's easier not to change stuff just so it's the same as everyone else.

if we tried to change currency, measurement, or some other thing that is different from other parts of the world, chaos would ensue.

as for soccer, the name football is already taken by the game played by the NFL teams. soccer is an appropriate name for a less popular sport. why change when you don't have to???

Because we already have football.

And for the World Series, did you forget about us Canucks? Toronto ain't in America...but in any case, "World Series" is still a little misleading.

Australian's refer to it as Soccer as well. It's probably because we have several other types of football though - AFL, Rugby League and Rugby Union...
