hi, I didn't do much "scratching" but more stroking .. it helped calm my son when he was having trouble sleeping .. and just when I would think he had dropped off and I would stop or take my hand away, he would reach out and grab it and put it back! I also always did a little bit of patting his back when I carried him as an infant .. he started doing it to me when he was about 10 or 11 mths old. He is now 2.5 and still does it when I pick him up for a hug.
If your baby likes it (and especially if it helps stop crying or fussing) then go ahead and do some gentle scratching.

Good question. I don't actually scratch my sons (3 months old) back. I just give him routine baby massages. Which is really just rubbing baby oil on his back, arms, legs and tummy. He seems to be quite content when I do that for him.

Yup, I ran my nails backwards over their skin. That way they got the tops of the nails, and not the end, doesn't scratch or tear up sensitive skin. Both my boys loved it, they're 10 and 8 now and still ask me to scratch their backs. Of course now that they're older I can use the ends of my nails.

Rubbing their backs to sooth them is the best! There is no need to scratch their backs!

Only if it is itchy, otherwise I rub it gently as though I was rubbing lotion on their backs. I've done this since the kids were born and every now and then they snuggle up during a movie and I rub "tickle" their backs (they are 8 and almost 6)

Yes, and my son loves it! When he is sick, it is the only way to get him to go to sleep. I still scratch my daughter's back and she is 5. When I do, we talk and joke and have quality time together. It helps us both relax!

Yes, I did. Very lightly, and it's something I still do 9 years later.

i remember my mom doing that for me when i was really really young...and she sometimes still does it til this day...but that's on rare occasions. I'm 14 and in high school..and a mother's love can conquer anything.
