Any war vet will be affected psychologically by the awful things they see. Many war vets are stricken with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. I think this is a particularly serious issue with Vietnam vets because of the brutality that occurred in some of the battles there. From what I understand there was a lot of "hands on" combat and things going on that were really awful. For example sending a baby toward troops with a grenade in its diaper to trick them and what not. There are conventional rules of war which were definitely not followed in the Vietnam battles. I'm no expert on what happened there, but do some reading and I think you will see why it caused so many brave soldiers to have so many after affects.

Read The Vietnam War 1945-1990 by Marilyn B. Young. Out of all the books I've had to read about Vietnam, this one explains why some Vietnam Vets are the way that they are.

It's not just Vietnam. It's any war. Look up all the wars in our history. The phrase has gone from "shelll shock" to "post traumatic stress disorder.". All the same thing. Just different terminology. Just thnk about what being in battle would be like and maybe you'll understand. Being female, I haven't been to war. But I have been around since World War II and have seen a lot.

It is said that a chemical was used called Agent Orange. It had side effects. Additionally, the "Conflict" was vicious and brutal and many men was traumatized and never recovered. Also, unlike today's war, the soldiers of that time were not welcomed home and were often critized for their involvement. You can read more on the subject for a more detailed understanding of the period.

They gave them drugs to help with the war, it effected them, duh. Going through something like that, being on cocaine or whatever it was they gave them then, think about it. Coming back home, they have flash backs.
I use to work at a car wash, people would drive their cars up and get out, we would vacuum it, one guy would start screaming and crawl under the cars. Poor guy.
