BRAKE FLUID in the POWER STEERING UNIT! HELP? It was at least 4 oz of brake fluid. It's already making that humming noise after I cleaned out all that I could and put fresh power steering fluid in. I know I need to fix it. (lol) But who out there knows the immediate damage to the steering colum, and dangers of driving the car?? Or long term deteriation if I can't service it due to financial issues right now? Thanks.

the brake fluid can cause all of the rubber to swell up. ewww, this could be bad. When I wsa working a the dealership, we use a power steering system flush tool from "BG" and it worked quite well to remove all of the contaminated fluid and replace with fresh fluid.
I know you said you drained the fluid and that's great but you probably didn't get all of it.

Now that you've added fluid you need to turn the wheel back and forth to purge the air out of the system with the engine running. The air is the cause of the whining noise. If the brake fluid wasn't in there too long you should be OK.

It will not do nothing to the steering column so dont worry about that. Dangers of driving well it will not just break on you steering you of control and making you wreck. The steering wheel will just be hard to turn for you but you can turn it. You will just be getting a free not wanted work out...

I don't think there is any damage to the steering gears or rack depending on the type of steering systems you have . both type of fluids are hydraulic .you might loose the supply hoses and drain the system completely, and refill with the type of fluid your owner Manuel calls for

Its going to damage ur power stearing pump and worst case is it will go out and of course it will need to be replaced..... The brake fluid will eat up the seals in the power stearing pump. Becareful while driving beacuse the power stearing pump can go out while driving! If this happens it will be very hard to stear the car..

well it will be harder to turn a bit if its still amking noise. but thats what was wrong anyway it sounds like. brake fluid isnt going to hurt it. what it will do is swell up the rubber seals . If you got it out it will be fine. Its not going to hurt it like that. The pump sounds like its gone anyway. If you cant get a new one call the junk yard and get one . Just dont strip the threads putting it on it will be ok

Don't worry about it.
It is almost the same fluid but with a few different additives.
