I am not sure if this helps you but....a few years ago I bought a used BMW Z3 and had the same situation with the key. When I took it to the dealer, I was told that my car didnt have the keyless entry option. The guy there suggested that I put in an after market alarm system. So I did just that and now I carry the key to the Z3 with the keyless alarm control that the alarm company had given me.
I know it is kind of weird because I also have a BMW X5 with a key that works as a keyless enrty, so I see the difference, and use it everyday. Anyway I hope this helps you out.

now i have read the answers from the people who obviously dont own one cause owners know that the battery in the key cant be replaced at a local store. They are suppose to charge when you put it in the ignition. Your car is a 2004 so it under warranty still? i would go to the dealer and raise hell. They should fix your problem for free??

That key does not have a battery in the key. Its charged by the car. You need to have the key synced to the car. Its not a big deal and does not take long but its best to have a shop do it.

there is just one answer to this. flow to a BMW broker, have them set you up with a key. in case you could not make that attempt or can not have sufficient money it, promote the BMW. do no longer purchase an uncut key from eBay. of route, you should purchase round BMW sellers, make acquaintances and be cool with the service adult adult males, instruct understand and be cool and also you'd be set.

check battery if no results means the chip in key needs to be brought to dealer to get re-programed.
