I went from the UK to live in Azerbaijan 10 years ago. Although most western fashions were acceptable, men wearing shorts were not - so the simple and decent thing to do was to respect there culture and not wear shorts.

No.
You are an individual with your own style and tastes. Sure, you may find some things in your new country that are appealing, but if no, don't buy them. You are a foreigner. You are expected to be different. That is Ok.
Foreign women are not expected to wear saris in India or Burkas in Jordan.

I am a foreigner living in Asia where the styles are very different. I try to find things I like here, and somewhat assimilate to their style, but the most important thing is that i like it, or else I won't be comfortable.

There are however, a few general rules of conduct. Don't expose yourself. If the culture has a more conservatice style of dress, don't show cleavage, or even your upper arms. You don't want to shock or offend anyone. Just dress respectifully, but according to your individual style.

Ok, they say when in rome, do as the romans do, and when in greece, don't bend over...
Ok,
Well, let me tell ya, it goes a little like this: At first, you read your guide book, and it says something like " the locals frown on wearing shorts" and so you bring some long pants, and then when you get there, after a couple of days, you think "what the hell do I care what these little monkey people like?" and you break out the shorts, and then you get a lot of mosquito bites, and you put long pants on again, but you still don't give a damn what they think, its just that your new style doesn't include mosquito bites.

You will have to do what you think is best. No one will be able to tell you from afar. I have been in China now for one year. I could not afford to change all of my clothing. After 4 months here i lost some kilos. My clothing needed to be updated. I bought some things in this country that look more like what others around me wear. I still, however, dress my own way most of the time. I do rely somewhat on the opinions of other foreigners here. Thanks for the question. It is up to you to do what you think best.

Well, its often better to blend in a keep a low profile in a new environment when you are going to live there. Since you didn't specify what country, just take time to get a "feel" for how things are done there and how the people act. Remember that adverse first impressions are difficult to overcome.

Yes, when in Rome, do as the Romans.

UNLESS....

if you are contemplating going to the rain forest or to live as a missionary among primitive tribes, I would suggest wearing something to keep yourself from getting sunburn.
