i think you need to discuss it with your spouse, is the marriage over? any chance of reconciliation? how long are you guys married? any children? cause if you are going to handle and proceed with legal separation but decided to go through divorce, legal separation is a waste of time and money. you might as well stay separated for 6 months so you can file for dissolution of marriage in which some state requirement prior on filing.
a lot of things to consider, it also depend on what state you are living, if you guys have properties, bills, children, you might need an attorney to put everything in writing to avoid conflict or confusion in the long run. alimony and child support, is something you need to think over with an attorney, both should agree what is the best for the children's benefit.

It would probably be wise to do so. If she does it first then she will get all of the things she asks for temporarily until it goes to court. Just like if you do so, you will get things first temporarily. It is most important if children are involved.
Or if there are lots of debts. This way neither one of you are responsible for any debts created after the filing of the separation agreement!
Good Luck!

Start the divorce process, which is initially a separation agreement.
I always like to see people try to work out their problems however, if the other person has left then it makes it rather hard to work things out and you need to cover your ***.

May depend on the laws in your state. However, generally speakng, you may be responsible for all debts and obligations she incurrs while you are still married. A legal separation should shield you from her actions.
You need legal advise, see an attorney.

how did she leave? totally moved out or left with a overnight bag etc..
yes if she has left you, you had better be very quick on any legal actions. because a judge will be more likely on her side if she does it first and you had better cover your butt, because it is not going to be easy. Quick and painless and sooner than better it's like pulling a band aide.. Good Luck
