Part of the secret of the wardrobe is explained in "The Magician's Nephew". In that book, Digory visited Narnia and Aslan gave him an apple from a tree in Narnia. Digory planted the apple core in his backyard in England and a tree grew from the core. The tree fell in a gale and Digory made the wardrobe from the wood of the tree. Because the tree grew from a Narnian apple and still had magic in it, the wardrobe was able to transport the children in "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" back to Narnia.
