Timing is everything. One easy technique to remember is to have your left hand outstretched, when the ball comes into that imaginary line with your fingers, that is the point to make contact with the ball. As for controlling your power, maybe you should try adjusting the way you hit the ball, you're probably swinging too hard and too much with a racquet that gives you too much power already. Try a smaller swing, less arcing swing.

Really, it's about developing better technique and timing. The likes of Roddick and Federer blast the ball around the court with enormous power but, because their technique and timing is so good, they routinely keep the ball in the court. What you should try that would help is to concentrate on aiming the ball at specific areas of the court instead of how hard you hit it. Also pay attention to how you hold the racquet. A reliable grip is also very important. This would help you keep the ball in play and help you hit more accurately. Once this happens the power will come naturally. From my own experience this has helped me greatly. Especially with my serve. When I started playing, I tried to hit the ball as hard as I could, without paying any attention to developing a sound consistent technique. I usually just ended up hitting the net or the fence. When I started aiming more carefully, my serve improved greatly. As well as accuracy, the improved technique has also helped me increase the speed of my serve. It's also important to keep your eye on the ball, instead of your racquet or your opponent. You'll find that this will keep you much more focused on your shots instead of outside distractions.

Hi!

It's the same as if you just completed your drivers licence and you want to drive 100 mph. :)

There is no magic technique except adding topspin to the ball. But first...

You are not experienced yet to control the ball at high speed. Yes, we get lucky occasionally but that is not knowledge or skill of tennis.

You need to play at lower speed where you can control the ball - direction, depth, spin and speed. When you are consistent at that speed add maybe 10% extra speed and try to play.

If you don't learn top spin you have no chance of playing hard and consistent. So work on it and on adding speed. Take it step by step. Tennis is extremely demanding sport if you want to play it at a higher level.

It's not too much power, but the angle of the racket when you hit the ball. Tennis is not like baseball. Believe me, I tried.

Try playing ping pong and you will learn, as you don't have someone coaching you, how to do it on a smaller scale. It has to do with how you feel the racket contact the ball, at what angle, and with what kind of spin.

adjust your grip facing slightly downwards and make sure your swing goes from down behind to up across your shoulder.

You have to learn to brush up or in other words hit topspin, that is what keeps it in.
