That's kind of hard to figure out especially since the statement is taken out of context. What's peculiar is the second part of the sentence, "rather than expect that I will not make it." The sentence as a whole simply doesn't make sense because of the "not" in front of "make."

Another way the sentence could make some sense is if you changed expect to expecting and remove the two words: rather than.
