I'm British and I'm glad to be represented by a head of state who has intelligence and decorum, yet sometimes I receive comments from Americans who make it sound like having the Queen is a bad thing. I am against having a president because I feel that politicians are unfit to represent a country - all too often they have their own agenda and don't always put their countries' interests first.

Being represented by a monarch doesn't make me any less free. It doesn't mean my voice is any less well heard and taken into account. It doesn't mean I have less say over how the country is run.

Do you all seriously think the Queen still sits in her office making all the decisions and the people just have to follow her word? You do realise don't you that we elect a government to run the country, and we are just as free and democratic as you? Yes the queen has to give royal assent to bills, but royal assent hasnt been refused since Queen Anne, the current Queen has no power.

I don't know about other monarchies, but the British monarchy costs the British taxpayer less than 70 pence each per year, and brings in far more money though tourism. How muhc does it cost to maintain the white house?

As an American, I am thankful to Britain. It was because of the history of the world as the framers of the constitution understood it, that they chose to write that document. The history of England was of great importance in the ideas set forth in the Bill of Rights. When the colonies won their independence from England and became the United States of America, the Kings and Queens were the rulers. If it were not for the USA, England would not have a parliament today to run the government. They saw how things worked in the colonies across the pond and decided they would like to do something similar. I am glad you are proud to be British and proud of your Queen. I am glad to be American and proud of my President. Thanks for your question.

Having a monarch as a figurehead is one thing, having a monarch as the actual ruler of the country is another thing entirely. The British people elect the people who actually represent them in government, just as Americans do. However, having a monarch who can change laws on a whim is not a good thing. That is why the United States rebelled against the British Empire in the 18th century. Since then, the Brits have adopted a government much more like the U.S.'s.

I'm studying European History right now and I've learned much about the monarchy....back in the day it didn't sound all that good, but now its more of a symbol and just tradition...a tradition that the English do not want to give up. Yes, I know that you elect your government officials and that you are a democracy....its just a cultural thing that makes Americans and English have different views on this.

Didn't the British monarch loose much of the power way before the American declaring independence from them? I don't remember much from history class, but I thought it was the American who used to pay tax to the UK but not getting represented and not getting their voices heard in the British parliament.

Who wants a powerless figurehead to suck up huge amounts of the country's wealth?

We have enough problems, or haven't you noticed?

You may only pay 70 pence a head now for those inbreds, but they sit on a huge pile of stolen wealth.
