I am doing some early research on laptops. I am thinking on buying a new laptop within the next year. I have narrow my selection to 3 options:

Dell Inspiron
HP Pavilon
Apple Mac

I am attending Baylor University. Most of my classmate have a mac. Are macs really worth it? I know macs are better with viruses. I am not a gamer; however, I do like to use picture tools for editing. I do not want to spend more than 2K in my new laptop. Will an IBM better with the new Windows Vista? What software will I need for the mac besides the Office software? Overall, what is better for a college guy an IBC or a Mac?

macs are excellent computers. not suceptible to viruses and much more stable than any pc. it sounds like you have pretty basic needs. i notice ms office is not offered on the apple website. ms has been getting snooty about apple horning in on their market so they may have discontinued it.
i use a program called openoffice. it's an open source (free) version of ms office and fully compatible. see link below.
macs also come with the ilife suite. photo organizing and basic editing, imovie and idvd for movie creation and basic editing. iweb is a good simple program for creating websites.
and if you need more advanced photo editing there is an open source version of photoshop called gimp. see link below.
pc's are nice because software is more widely available and getting it fixed is much easier as well. but macs rarely break and are easy to fix yourself most of the time.
as a mac owner i'm obviously biased but i think in the long run you'll be happier with the mac.

Have experience with Dell for the last 10 years (big Dell pusher for a time), they have gone down in the quality control area. Had to replace mother boards, hard drives, heat elements etc on 3 of the Dells I own in the last 5 years. Bought Sony (great) and HP (will see) and have none of the problems that I have with my Dells. I would go with either HP or Sony and stay with windows and leave Mac's to the graphic artists. Mac limit the availablity of software you can use and are incompatible with other individuals systems your friend may have. Hope this helps. Good luck in school.

First of all, do not get a Dell...they are the worst.
Second of all, macs are cool, but sometimes they dont have all the software you may need or want. if you are planning on doing a lot of music/video/sound/picture editing and such, then macs are really good. otherwise, stick with a pc. and definately dont get a mac. acers and toshibas are really nice. i would recommend either of those two. HPs arent that great either...they dont last as long. toshiba has nice laptops for students as well.

Suprised no one has pointed this out yet. Apple makes a product called bootcamp (currently in beta) that allows you to install WinXP alongside of OSX. Add in a linux partition and you have the best of all worlds. Pick the Mac add the windows and linux and you will be ready for anything.

I have a pc, so i'd say get a pc, they are easier to use, and macs only have one mouse button. macs are only good if you do graphic design. pc's are better for everything else. pc's are cheaper too. 95% of people use pc's so they must be better.
NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats all complete nonsense

Buy a mac. Check other questions i've answered for a million and one reasons to buy a mac.

relies upon what you will use it for. Macs are fab yet somewhat costly. the recent L/Tops have extra effective batteries presently. have you ever tried changing the battery in Toshiba satellite tv for pc? it would desire to easily be a dud? sturdy success.
