Get this- the rest of the neighborhood refused to learn to speak German, and no one would hire my grandfather until he learned English. When my grandmother went to the store, she was expected to speak English to the people who worked there.

When my father and his siblings were sent to school, they refused to have special classes or programs to cater to them. They were expected to just learn to speak English and assimilate with their peers.

So, why was everyone else so prejudiced?

People in the U.S. just expect everybody in the US to be able to communicate in the English language because that is the only language they speak. The same thing is true with other countries. You do not seriously think that the Americans should learn all the immigrants' languages in order to make their lives real easy. By doing so, you are putting additional burden on the shoulders of the host country's citizens. Under any circumstance, that is not right and should not happen anywhere in the world.

Well, sadly, the core of the problem is the fact that the US lacks a definate national language. Technically and legally speaking, everything should be provided to you so that you can function speaking what ever language you wish. Now in european countries, ie germany, england, and france, they have national languages permitting them to disallow you and yours to remain unless you learn the language of the land. Hopefully the US will adopt a national language soon, we waste to much money as it is!

Yes, it was so good for the kids to suffer and feel left out and drop out in third grade because they coudn't take it. It's great when immigrants call the police and can't get anyone to understand that daddy's dying of a heart attack. Wow, the good old days - why'd we ever get a heart and start treating people with compassion? Oh, maybe because we lived through those good old days and decided to have some compassion.

Let me get this straight. You expected people in the USA to learn your language because you couldn't speak English? What if everyone who immigrated to the USA thought we should learn their language?

WHY can't people get along..When are people going to realize that we are different and everyone deserves to be treated the same..I know some people make it hard to be nice to them but we should all at least try..The world wouldn't be where it is now if we could learn to live together and accept the differences..But I guess it will NEVER happen..

That's not prejudice. Everyone learns English, why must they be special? When in Rome, do like the Romans... heard that before?

Sounds like the "good ole' days."

It was the same for my grandparents' parents when they came. I don't think they expected any other treatment, and I don't think it occurred to them as prejudice.

They were in America! The land of the FREE! They delighted in learning English.
