When I was a foreign exchange student I went to a summer cultural thing BEFORE I went to the foreign country.

We played games that made us realize that we needed to understand the customs of the place we were traveling. It helped us to understand that if we were not accepted right away it was because of a cultural thing and not necessarily because they did not like us.

We talked about language and policies.

If this is describing a trip AFTER you go to the country then it is likely a conference with exchange students and others from the country. I did a retreat like this when I was living in Mexico and we did swimming, rope swinging, sang songs, etc. It was just an opportunity for the natives to get to know us and to understand our culture a little better. It was great fun!

Usually they visit other countries and stay in local homes. They are usually under the guidance of a teacher or professor from their school that have a list of cultural activities for them to do while there.
