Call letters for radio stations west of the Mississippi start with K and east of the Mississippi start with W. (only applies in the US)

Originally, stations could pick their own call letters, regardless of their location, as long as they started with W or K. When they changed the designation to be based on location, the stations already operating were "grandfathered" and allowed to keep their call letters. That's why there are some that don't fit the rule.

It depends where you live, in wisconsin where i live all the radio stations start with W. I think it may have something to do with which side of the Mississippi River you live on or somthing.
