As a Yankee fan I must admit you are correct. I've been saying ever since the all star break that either Leyland or Torre should be manager of the year. Leyland because of the complete turn around or Torre because of his ability to keep the Yankees in the hunt in spite of the injuries. I'd have to give Leyland the edge because of the vast improvement in the Tigers record from last year to this year.

I think that the baseball writers have to submit ballots before the ALDS starts next Tuesday afternoon so where the Twins and Tigers end up in the playoffs will not be a consideration. I would like to think that a fairminded baseball writer would consider where the Twins have been in the last 3 years (two out of three years as division winners) against what Jim Leyland had to do with the Tigers (near record setting terrible in 2003). Plus in terms of personnel the Twins feature Torii Hunter and Johan Santana, plus Mauer and Morneau are having career years. The Tigers lack real stars (OK, Pudge is a star, Ken Rogers is this year). On balance, the manager of the year in the AL should be Jim Leyland.

Georgie, I watched the Tigers all summer and if anyone doubts Leyland's ability, they're blind or haven't been watching the same team I was!
Georgie knows what he's talking about :
20 games under last year, people! Playoff contention this year!
There aren't even a handful of managers that could've done
that despite some great talent on their teams.
Manager of the Year? It makes sense!
Leyland gets my vote, at least. : )

I got to give props to Leyland but you who my vote goes to. Tons if injuries(at one point in time almost all of the starting outfield was on the DL) a bad start pitching problems and Gardenhire held the team together got them through some rough patches. Hopefully they get past the Yankees to see the Tigers in the play offs.

You can't. Leyland did amazing things with a previously mediorce team. Th eonly other consideration is Gardenhire because of how his team turned around in the second half. But my vote would be for Leyland for sure.

leyland was awesome with the pirates, marlins, tigers no doubt
they won the world series in 97. plus the pirates were so close to win the nlcs 1992. so leyland is coach of the year this year

No, I can't doubt him. He will be the AL Manager of the Year. If he isn't, then there is no respect. It looked liked that Jerry Narron would have been NL Manager of the Year and then, of course, the Reds tanked big time. Poor Jerry, he did what he could with what he had.

I think it's a slam dunk. He's earned it, popular culture has a desire to give him recognition.....and the biggie: NO BODY picked the Tigers to compete this year.
Winning the division will cinch it for him

Someone on the tigers deserves to win something, since they'll be going nowhere in the playoffs.
