I'm pretty good at ratio problems, but even I don't see how in the hell you're supposed to get an answer from that limited information. It's probably a logic problem, which is why I am stinking at it. Sorry. :-(

30 chickens, 7 cages.

I found this by trial and error and drawing pictures. I started off with three cages (I drew squares to represent this). I put 4 chickens (dots) in each one, then put two more chickens outside the cages. Then, I drew 3 more cages and put 6 into each. This didn't work, so I added more cages and more chickens to each drawing until it worked out. This probably isn't how your teacher wants you to do it, but it worked out for me. :)

simultaneous equations where x is number of cages used to hold chickens and y is total number of chickens.
4x + 2 = y
6(x-2) = y....or....6x - 12 = y (We used x -2 since it takes 2 fewer cages to house the chicks when we stuff 6 in them at once)

subtract 1 equation from the other to get:
2x = 14....or....x = 7 (number of cages)
