I'm told that i let people walk all over me and never stand up for myself, but i just thought that i was laid back and didn't care about some things either way. It seems like i always pay and no one asks me my opinon on things. I guess i've become accustomed to going with the flow. Is this bad? How can i stand my ground? Thanks.

Laid back usually means things rarely get under your skin. Passive is being non confrontational towards those who do get under your skin. Often when someone trys to overcome being overly passive they come across overly aggressive. Thats because others never realzed that something they were previously doing was bothering you. Its a gradual problem where all along you didn't set your boundaries to those who know you. They took you for granted. So you have to take a stance and don't worry if someone is taken back by your reaction. Don't be surprised it it feels uncomfortable at first even for you. Try to be more intellegent than emotional when you assert yourself otherwise you come across a little too rash.

Its good to take inventory of how others treat you and see if there is ways you can re-assert yourself in situations that made you uncomfortable. See if you are being unconscious to others by you body language such as failure to make eye contact especially in uncomfortable situations. Tell yourself ahead of time how you will respend given that same situation and try to rehearse it in your mind. Its a fine line between kindly confronting someone who does you wrong and aggressiveness towards that person. If you react emotionally people generally will have less respect than if you are more intelligent in asserting yourself. With practice it becomes less of a fine line to walk and more of a sane path to journey your life on.

Being laid back is more about your lookout on life, and how you approach things. Do you plan a lot or do you go with the flow, do you keep things very organized? Being passive is different - it means you choose to go along with other people because you don't want to confront anyone. Or when things happen, you don't speak up for yourself. I asscoiate being passive to being a doormat, whereas being laid back is more of a hippy kind of attitude on life.

laid back is deliberate.

Consciously accepting (emotionally accepting) the consequences for remaining "passive" at any particular moment is not truly passive at all.

When you are wondering about passiveness, ask yourself: what is being chosen here? Is there a patience or a fearfulness?

Quiet patience can be extremely assertive but one must continually confront a series of internal fears, and also hold the willingness for spontaneity somewhere within yourself.

Passive is when you don't do anything about anything. Laid back means you aren't stressing ****, but you might not let **** slide.
