Could you have a typo here? Mercury is a metal which is best known as one of the few chemical elements that is liquid at room temperature. It is also commonly encountered because it is found in thermometers. But I cannot find any references for "mercury foment," and I've never heard of it.

It's a topical disinfectant that contains mercury. It has not been used for many years, as mercury's toxicity has been better understood. Do not use this.

I think you mean mercury fulminate, it is an explosive that is pressure sensitive and used as the primer in bullets.
