AIDS

Everyone is saying AIDS and that makes sense given the fact he had casual sex and shared needles with other people, plus she lived in San Francisco home of the bath houses, but the question becomes how did she get HIV and not pass it on to Forrest? Lets face it . she leaves him and he goes running cross country back and forth until he gets tired. If he had HIV that would have excelerated the T Cell loss considerably. Then again Ginnie could have contracted it in the hospital from a transfusion or an accidental needle stick. The fact is that they never state for certain what she is dying of. They only say that it is something new. So the answer is "Some new virus." Oh, and back then, AIDS was not considered a virus but a cancer. And if you have ever been around anybody with AIDS you woud know that the dark blemishes are pronounced. Ginnie had none.

Although they never specifically said in the movie, I believe the clues they gave pointed to AIDS. The timing would have been correct, and also the mysterious nature of her disease (the fact that they didn't really know a whole lot about it, etc). It is also the same type of vagueness they used around some other topics that they didn't just outright name, like the King in the house, the black girl going to the white college, etc. Only this time it highlighted the lack of knowledge of the whole world, not just Forest.

By the way, this IS just a movie. There were quite a few general references about current events that were not fully shown in the movie. It really wasn't necessary for them to show Jenny in all her sick and declining glory just to be able to make a small statement about AIDS, any more so than any of the other references they made. In fact, it probably would have contributed to making it a much darker movie had they been completely realistic portraying Jenny's disease. I really loved the light-hearted version.

I believe that the writer left Jenny's demise up to the imagination of the audience for a reason. See, Jenny was clearly not the best of people, but she was good to and for Forrest, and that's all that matters. So, why ruin her image as her husband's savior by stating that she had HIV/AIDS or something else along those lines? Scientifically though, (1) If it were AIDS, she would have been suffering for much longer and (2) If It were AIDS both Forrest and Little Forrest would have it, or at least HIV. And if you argue that maybe she got it after she and Forrest hooked up again I would argue against that saying that HIV has a gestation period long enough and AIDS also has a gestation period long enough to place her time of infection far enough in the past to disprove that theory...anyway, best of luck in your search for answers.

Aids?

They never said, but had it been AIDS like everyone is telling you, don't you think she would have infected older Forrest when she had sex with him and younger Forrest by being pregnant with him?

I think it was AIDS, cause she said the doctors didn't know what she had and there was no medicine for it yet. Wasn't it around the late 70's early 80's when the disease started spreading a lot, not sure thought. its my quess
