This is how I understand it:
Ambient: Soft mood type music. It's hard to explain, but the idea of it is to create soundscapes which create an atmosphere and transport you to another place. This is often done with very low tuned guitars or electronic samples which create a hum or drone similar to a blowing wind (or similar) over the top soft instrumentation such as pianos, harps or squeaks are added at random points to create interest in the piece, add depth to it, and further the atmosphere. Examples include Igloo (band who uses all ice instruments), Mirag, Decoder Ring and on the poppier side of things, some Radiohead songs.
Progressive music: It works on the ideal of pushing music into a more complex and original direction, away from the standard rock & roll. While rock & roll songs most often only go for a few minutes, and consist of just guitars & drums, prog rock (as it's called) songs often go for MUCH longer (pushing 20 mins), and have a wider variety of instrumentation such as horns, harps & strings, and many other things. The idea is to push boundaries, so many prog rock songs sound downright wierd when you first hear them. Them most famous prog rock band was Pink Floyd, and at the moment The Mars Volta would be classed as prog rock.
Trance music: Is a form of electronic dance music which relies on a hypnotic beat and melody. While many other forms of dance music have a cresendo somewhere in the song which the song works up into, and excites the crowd, trance music most often does not. It's generally just the same constant beat and sound all the way through, therefore working the crowd into a trance. An example of a trance/acid house group would be Infected Mushroom, from Israel.

I don't really know. But I know when I listen to old blues artists, man I'm in a trance. I have found that the blues are the main foundation of music as we know it today. There is so much emotion and feeling in it. I guess this must have been why Elvis Presley used to hang out in the juke joints as a kid. Also this is probably why Jimi Hendrix is considered one of the best. But if you listen you will hear where they developed their styles. I started out with heavy metal as a teen but as I got older I developed an ear for Zepplin, Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn and others. But now I'm going even further back to artists like Albert Lee and B.B. King. So listen to music for what it is and you will learn to appreciate it all.
