Yes, you absolutely can swap the turbo engine into your 97 impreza. Now there might be some slight fabrication and you will need to purchase new motor mounts to do this but it is all very capable of doing. Depending on which engine you want to swap (EJ20t or EJ25) you might need different mounts. (Im not real big Subie guy but I know enough)
My advice to you would be to go around to Subaru forums and ask some questions. There are plenty of die hard Subie fans that will give you all the information you need to make your swap go as smooth as possible. I wish you best of luck on your swap!

Yes you can.
The ej20 out of a wrx is a good choice, if you have a professional shop do it it cost from $5k for just the engine to $8-9k for the whole drivetrain (engine, tranny, and rear end, even the dash can be swapped with work). Also if pro. done, is 50 state smog legal as well.
Mechanically the swap isn't too bad, is the wiring thats a pain. Some places change the whole thing, some merge the two. Both are realiable.
Still possible is the ej257 swap, but the engine swap alone is about $8-9k. However you DO get 300chp. The whole drivetrain is about $12k 14k. A lot of money, but you'd essentially have a STi with a GC8 body.
As far as a wrx being a tighter car, that can be fixed, between a nice strut spring combo (or coilovers, thicker swaybars, and a rear strut bar, and maybe a few more odds and ends, you'd be set.

Yes it could be done, but it would not work well and it would cost a fortune.
1. engine is way expensive
2. new wiring harness would be required
3. the wrx has a much stiffer frame-your's would not handle well
4. you would spend as much as buying a wrx and you would still have an impreza.
You've got some good choices around. Mazda 3 is coming out with a 250HP speed3 in 2007 faster than the wrx but slower than the sti (currently there is not much in the class of the sti)

It could be to easily. Just make sure that you find an EJ20 (2 Litre) from ebay or somewhere else. The new WRX and STi's have an EJ25 (2.5 Litre) You can find info at NASIOC (North American Subaru Impreza Owners Club) forums.

I have an 04 STi that i love. You can check it out on my website www.supercars.com
