Is it worth insulating interior walls and floors between 1st floor and second (two story home). I live in Michigan. I've been told it makes a nice sounds barrier, but I have cold air returns and heating ducts that allow for a lot of sound to travel anyway... just curious to see what the experts think.

Hello from a fellow michigander...

As far as insulating the floors, in the summer, upstairs tends to be much hotter than downstairs. Insulation COULD prevent some of the heat from rising, thereby keeping the upstairs a bit cooler.

Interior walls could be insulated as well, but I don't really see much of a point to it myself. Unless, of course, you are keeping some of the rooms in your house cold on purpose to save on heating costs (My wife and I do this), in which case it would help keep the cold air from spreading from the closed off room to the others.

One thing to consider is the spray in insulation. I am not sure off hand what it is called now, but it goes in as a foamy liquid and solidifies quickly, making an awesome insulation. This is best on exterior walls, but could probably be used interior as well. A few small holes which are easy to patch over, and it's done.

Good luck!

It realy depinds on what the floorplan of the house is. The main thing is that the outer walls, cieling and basement/crawlspace are well insulated. If one room is heated or cooled differantly then the next ,the insulation could noticably help. If all the house is equely heated or cooled I cannot see that much differance.
If you are wanting sound insulation then the inside walls will help noticably. there are air duct baffles available for sound control.

Insulating interior walls will do nothing to lower heat loss to the outside. Unless you have a noise problem, the cost and effort is not worth it.

Sure it is worth it. Imagine how much worse it would be without the insulation.

Yes, it is worth. It will definitely reduced any unwanted vibrations created by the ducks for cool air returns, etc.

It depends on what you want to do. More insulation means lower charges on your gas or heating bill.

nope. it probably isn't really worth it, as the sound will still freely travel through doors and vents. it would help some, but i wouldn't count on any huge differences.
