You're jogging a lot of rusty brain cells.
The children's story about "little black Sambo" outsmarting and out running the tiger (he got the tiger to chase his own tail until he melted into butter, then Sambo put him on his pancakes and ate him) goes way back. When they started the Sambo's chain they dropped the black part but kept the story. Then "Sambo" started to be used as a racial insult, and as others have said, the chain started to fail, then was taken over. IHOP (which all had steep pitched blue roofs at that same time) is much the same sort of place.

Yes, I remeber Sambos. It had a story on the menu of Sambo a little black kid being chased by a Tiger who wanted to eat him. I used to go to one in California when I was about eight or nine with my parents. I think they got bought out, but there is no way they could have a place like that now! Way too much PC these days!

Yes, I remember Sambo's! It was a lot like Bob's Big Boy. It would probably be considered politically incorrect these days, since the word sambo could be a racially derogatory term. I don't know if they closed down or what, as it's been nearly 22 years since I've been to California.

Yes, I remember Sambos. There was one in L.A. on Vermont Avenue off of Wilshire Blvd. I think they tore that one down.

yes I remember they had the story of sambo being chased by tigers and turning them or him into butter on the tables. I think they either went out of business or turned into another food chain

Yes, I remember them. I think the civil rights people had issues with them...they probably changed their name. They were a pancake house.
