It is so hard to meet girls in public, because they all assume you are in it for one thing. How can I meet someone without a corny pick up line or coming off like a jerk?

Go to the library and then go to a section that interests you, when a girl puts down a magazine that might interest you, pick it up and then see if you can get near her --in a NON CREEPY WAY--and start a conversation. Don't be a stalker though. Back away if she does not seem interested.
Go to the grocery store, join a club, the church, special clubs, the BARS are not the way to do it

That's hard to answer. Good guys are so few and far between, I would think that if you are yourself and you act genuinely and kindly, girls will pick up on that. We (girls) can pick up on guys that have an act pretty easily. If you're nervous, that may be misinterpreted. Just hang in there and keep being a good guy!

Finding a benign commonality works best i think, like someone suggested if you meet in a grocery store, nobodys going to think your thinking about the melons when you are handling them.
A hobby is of course a good thing, gyms work too.
Bookstores etc.
