I am thinking about moving out to Mindanao where my g/f lives for the majority of the year. I hear there are some safe cities in Mindanao, but for the most part it is more on the dangerous side compared to the rest of the country. Am I putting myself at high risk if I were to move in this area or is it not as bad as they make it out to be, particularly in that city. Thanks.

Haven't heard or read about any foreigners being kidnapped in that area for years now....should be safe. Things could change very quickly though so If I were you, I'd be just a little more careful when walking around. True, many reports coming out of the Philippines are exaggerated...but it never hurts to be a little cautious when you're abroad and easily spotted in a crowd, especially in Mindanao.

Oh, try to be somewhere else just before general elections in May of 2007...It's usually peak season for kidnappings and extortion. (candidates trying to get quick cash for their campaign war chest)...heheheh....Don't want to scare you but that's just a fact of life in those parts. To a certain extent, your friends and neighbors will try to protect you but then again, you might be putting THEM at risk.

All in all, if you can manage to convince your GF to move to another part of the Philippines while you're there, it would be safer and maybe more fun at the same time.

Malaybalay, Bukidnon is a great place. There are lots of foreigners there because of the big plantation owned by multinational companies with expatriates. The climate is like that of Baguio in Northern Luzon, less the pollution and the noise of the city. The peace situation is good and there are few Muslims there, compared to other places in Mindanao.

Bukidnon is a wonderful place. The peace and order situation in Mindanao has always been overrated and highly publized - mostly blown out of proportion for it to be newsworthy. Mindanao is generally safe. I stayed in Zamboanga ( the hottest area with regards to peace and order ) for a month and I am still in one piece. What you should equip yourself with when you decide to plant your roots to Mindanao is have enough respect for the locals and learn the value of humility, patience, and mostly - social adaptability - once you have these in your arsenal - you will find Malaybalay - or the rest of Mindanao and the Philippines a lot closer to home.

Davao is doubtless one in all the safer places in Mindanao. there are various places in Mindanao that i would not bypass to. i'd bypass to Davao with none hesitation. Many expats love the city. I easily have not visited yet. Now there are some issues approximately Davao that i'm not prepared on. The community government is extraordinarily strict. This has reward, it assists in protecting crime low. in my view, i hit upon a number of their policies to be slightly overstepping. as an occasion, it is unlawful to smoke everywhere outdoors of your place. What concerns me approximately that may not which you will not smoke however the restrictive concepts-set. it is super once you're for a undeniable ordinance yet what in case you at the instant are not. There are another issues happening there that i'm purely not keen to talk in public. i don't prefer to run this danger of having on the undesirable area of a few individuals. additionally they don't seem to be actuality, rumors and investigations.

I would go if I was you. I have been there. Just be careful and things should be alright. Your gf will know what is good and follow her guidence. One suggestion is...don't have the same routine every day. Never be at the same place at the same time every day. If you are not sure...Cagayon de oro, is the place to go.

It is very dangerous. The place is full of Muslims who want to kill westerners. When I visited the Philippines, my friends said never to go there.
