Two of my best were:
Calling the boss and saying I can't come in because grandma wandered away from the Home in just her slippers and a thin gown, and I had to go find her (I really went for a long ride on my motorcycle that day)
And:
Calling in (same gullible boss) on friday and saying I had to go out of town to watch my husband's kids from his former marriage because their mother had an aneurysm and was rushed to the hospital. (this got me a 4 day weekend, because I called in monday morning also and said she was being released that night)

Well Matt, since I don't think you're female, I won't suggest faking menstrual problems (it worked EVERY time; my high school government teacher thought I had the most messed up reproductive system ever!). Stomach "bugs" or headaches are relatively easy to fake and hard to prove false.

Oh god, I should tell no one this, ok, but one time, when I was in college, my friends and I wanted to go to Disney World for four days, very spur of the moment road trip. Anyway, I was working on campus in an office. At the time, my mother was in the middle of a messy divorce. So that Monday, I walked in to work, and told my boss that my mom needed me home on Thursday and Friday to babysit my brother and sister because she would be in court all day. Neddless to say, they let me have off. And they felt sorry for me. It was the one of the best trips of my life, and I will never regret "faking it", for that moment in my life. (I never really traveled when I was a kid anyway) I felt a little bit of guilt, but sometimes, you just have to live life.

Well the tried and true is faking a cough and cold. It's fairly easy to sound congested on the phone. But then, saying you are sick to your stomach and vomiting is good too- nobody wants you around when you are vomiting.

for one, don't do it too often.... I find that when you say you have an upset stomach it usually works best because minor stomach problems usually work themselves out fairly quickly.... but definitely don't go out anywhere where you have a chance of running into someone you work with or for

Stomach cramps - there are no real physical symptoms for them. Haven't you ever seen Ferris Buellers Day off?

I use pink eye -- clears up in a day with drops and is highly contagious.
I also use home repair -- like water heater exploded or something like that.
