If a man gets attacked by a group of men, and in defense the victim stabs one of his attackers with his knife, legal length, with no intention of killing, but does kill one of his attackers....what would this be charged as in the court.

2nd degree manslaughter. Barring any mitigating circumstances, they would get off.

the name of the charge will vary from state to state, there are no federal murder laws.

In general a level of manslaughter if they are charged, Since it was self defense if this can be proved the DA may not even press charges

Depends, if the evidence is strong enough that his own life was in danger he may not be charged at all.

In reverse, he could be charged with homicide.

If he can establish self defense it's justified. Otherwise it's involuntary manslaughter. (IMHO)
