How can being conscious of new information aid in memory or retention of that information.

For example; short term memory lasts less than 15 seconds. If you consciously make a connection to something that you already know it aids in understanding and the ability to recall it later is improved.

Take a random list of words (10 of them; numbered 1-10 but 2 words for each line) and read them. Do not allow anyone to write them down. For example, if you say basket, tablecloth for #1 and then 2 may be cat, curtain, etc. Then read just the first word and see how many people can recall the second word. Then explain to them that if they make a connection between the 2 or create a visual picture they will be able to recall most or all of the words. Do it again with a new group of words and see the improvements.

How about how memories are formed and the chemical differences between short-term and long-term memory

maybe something about concious and unconcious memories. cause there's stuff your brain picks up and you remember yet don't know why you remember this.
