For one thing, DO NOT PUT YOUR HEAD BACK. That will make it worse. Stuff Kleenex or small cotton balls in the nostril that's bleeding and put a cold wet compress on the back of your neck. Pinching the middle of your nose for a few seconds at a time will also help, but not consistently.
Putting your head back will make the blood run into your throat. Do you want to taste more blood than you already do? I'm not trying to be sarcastic, but just being honest.

Tilt your head back and hold an icepack to the outside of your upper nose for 5 to 10 minutes.
People who have a nose bleed that lasts longer than a few minutes either have high blood pressure, an internal injury to the know, or very thin blood from taking aspirin or other blood thinners.

pinch your nose with a tissue until it stops. And you can also look up nosebleeds online (say at webmd.com). They'll have some advice for you.
Usually a nosebleed will go away..but it may take a little while. If you get really worried, and it won't stop, consider calling your doctor.

Do not lift your head and don't tilt your head backwards. (All this does is force you to swallow blood and that is undesirable.) Simply sit in a normal position and apply pressure with a cloth over your nostrils. Wait 10 minutes. If the bleeding does not stop or you begin to feel faint, you will need to visit the emergency room.

take a cold wash rag and place it on the bridge of your nose and hold it there. This will help the ruptured blood vessel clot. Make sure you apply pressure to side of your nose which is bleeding and don't blow it,it only makes it bleed worse. Or you can stuff Kleenex up the nostril and apply pressure that way.

take a tissue and firmly pinch your nose with it for a little while. really press hard and look down while pinching it with the tissue. It usually works for me but sometimes i just keep blowing my nose. {i heard that might not be a good thing to do, but it usually works for me if im in a realy hurry}
