No it doesn't, this was just on mythbusters recently and they proved that having the tailgate down puts more drag on the back of the truck, so it really uses more gas.

The tailgate down myth has been around for a long time and no
matter how often it is proved wrong many people will still drive
around with their tailgate down. It does not help gas mileage
and it does nothing to enhance the areodynamics. It actually
works slightly better with the tailgate up.

NO!, especially nott newer ones. Engineers get payed 100's of thousands a year to design them that way. With the tailgate up, a "burble" of air is formed that is condusive to better aerodynamic flow over the whole vehicle. I know it seems like a tailgate catches a lot of wind, but that's not true... Those tailgate nets are sold to people who dont know any better.

No, this is like the guys putting the big spoilers on the back it doesn't do anything. They designed the trucks aerodynamics with the tailgate up. Tryed this theory in high school.

That does very little. Putting a cover over the opening does a lot more, plus looks a lot better.
