The sucking reflex is an inherited desire that every child is programmed with. Even babies in the womb suck their thumbs.
As they develop the sucking is associated with the comforting feeling of warmth, security, and nurishment. Thus they will suck their thumbs to sooth themselves, or to provide comfort.

because sucking is an involuntary motion that babies do(sucking on nipples) so if there is no nipple they need something else to suck on that feels good and their thumb is the closest thing

hey hun...it's a soothing thing for them....much like we take a hot bath or listen to music to relax....it's just their thing and completley normal....love daisy
