My computer shut down on me due to a "thermal event". Now I have the tower open and a fan's here to keep the processor cool. The moment I close the green lid (it's a DELL) that directs the air flow to the fan @ the back, the fan speed increases and it makes a noise and there's an excess amount of heat (hotter than usual) coming out. Without the fan I'm using the PC would shut down again. But I can't keep it like this forever. HELP PLEASE!!!

If there are a lot of fins on the heatsink, they tend to clog up with dirt. If the fan is making noises, it probably has a bearing going bad. I would replace the fan.

You might want to remove the heatsink to clean it with alcohol from a drug store. Be sure to replace the Thermal Barrier between the cpu and heatsink if you remove the heatsink. Artic Silver 5 is good for that. You might want to replace it with an aftermarket heatsink made by Zalman or others. They don't cost too much.

Take a can of compressed air and blow all of the dust out from around the fan, the cooling fins (called a heat sink or heat exchange), make sure you have good airflow and are not blocking the intake or exhaust and you might consider putting in another fan.

try using an actual fan (the kind you buy from home depot) and place it near the processor. if this does not work call Dell and ask to get a better fan, a refund, or possibly liquid cooling.

Well the short answer is due to improved programs they are requiring more processor usage. Is the processor overclocked.
A buddy of mine used a liquid freon airconditioner set up to combat this problem. Basically an airconditioner instead of a fan.
This can be dangerous though.

I have ordered a heatsink and fan from dell before it is so cheap buy a new one now because its a hell of alot cheaper than frying your cpu
