For example, right now the Japanese population is 127.5 million and in 2050 they predict it will be 104 million, and there are 1.4 children born per woman, and to sustain the population it must be 2.1. What other information did the demographer use and how can an average person attempt to predict the future population?

The answer is a differential equation. Solving for it would give you an equation like, P(t)=e^(rt)+C... I could work it out if you were really interested, and you can put in initial values for whatever situation you're talking about.

You can use Excel to input years and population. Then use the Chart Wizard to plot years on one axis and population on another. Then fit a curve to it using Excel. Then you'll have your formula.

Itt has to do with regression analysis. The best way to predict is to look at the past.
