Phon means sound.
Telephone originally mean sound sent or receved via telegraph or wires. This got shortened to "phone" after a while.
There are many other words with "phon"--phonograph, sound from plastc records, for example. Phon-a-thon--using sound communications to hold a fund-raiser of some kind. Phonetics--sounds of words.

I love these answers! Thanks for making me laugh everyone. I'm going to answer this question only because I'm thinking or hoping this person is a little kid. So, my answer is a phone is something you use to call people on that has a handle you talk into and listen on with a dial or buttons with numbers.
