Really not that hard.... Just unscrew both modems and replace the bad one with the good one. You WILL need the driver for it - either off the old computer or use the disk or CD. The only thing I can think of is that sometimes XP doesn't like old stuff - so it depends on a couple of things - but typically, as long as you have the driver, it should work - shouldn't be complicated.

if its 56k its easy. turn off your computer. open the case to expose the components. the modem will be in one of the expansion slots. find which one. if there is a front screw holding it in place, remove the screw. then just pull the modem out of the slot. (some are harder to pull out then others) but it should not take much to get it out. DO NOT use anything but your hand to pull it out with. especially anything metal if you are not expierienced with computers. slide the other modem in, you will feel it snap into place. obviously it only goes in one way so pay attention to the slot configuration. put the screw back in to hold it in place. turn the computer on. if you have the driver disk for the new modem, use it if not, windows should recognize new hardware and give you the option to install software for the modem......hope this helps.

If they are PCI cards it should be no more difficult than removing the retaining screw that holds the card in place and pulling it out. swap the computers and card and replace the retention screw. Then you just install the correct driver.
If the "Junk" computer will boot I would run Belarc* or Everest 1.51** to determine the exact card before changing computers.
