Can you say you "forgot" the court date?

I should ask what the hearing is about.
If you're being arrested or charged with something, you can have a warrant issued for your arrest and can be charged with contempt of court. (As in, if there has to be bail first, then they'll arrest you for not showing up)

If you're going to small claims court or something like that, they almost always take not showing up as an automatic assumption of guilt and the other party will win by default.

Depending on what you were supposed to be in court for determines what the penalty is going to be. You could have a bench warrant out for your arrest. If you were being sued, you automatically lost. No you cannot say you forgot the date. They will still punish you for missing the date. Your best hope is to plead no contest and hope for light sentencing.

Were you subpoenaed? If so, yes, you must go or an arrest warrent will be issued.
Are you suing someone or filing for a divorce? Something along those lines? If so, not going will look cause you to loose your case.
Are you going to be a witness? Not going would be bad if someone was counting on you.
Did you commit a crime? If so you best go or they will issue a warrent for your arrest.
Saying you forgot the court date is not a valid reason. Shows you aren't responsible and you will not be excused.

If Virginia follows the same procedure that the majority of states do, as soon as you don't show, a bench warrent is issued for your arrest. And, a count of contemp of court is added to your list of charges.

Bench Warrant was issued possibly, call and make sure you can re-set court date, or to find out if you have bench warrant now...pay the fine, show up and get it over with...

Depends on what kind of offense. If its just a traffic violation, then you'll just be found guilty in your absence, and you have to pay the fine and court costs. If its a big deal, then you may have other issues - like, they could find you in contempt of court and throw you in jail.
