There's a whole lot of other factors in play besides too much food and lack of exercise, although those are good answers. I don't remember the exact figures, but crops (animal and vegetable) in the US are way more than the calories needed for the population to maintain a healthy weight. Mostly corn--look at almost any processed food you buy, especially soda. High fructose corn syrup will be an ingredient. And also look at what foods are advertised. Calorie dense, nutrient light. It's not profitable to export the extras to those countries needing them, so they just market the stuff here.

Not going outside playing.
Kids just stay inside and play on the computer or watch TV non-stop.
I didn't have a TV for the first 6 years of my life. I spent evenings and weekends playing outside. Even after we got TV, I used to play so much I would come in the house in the evenings dripping with sweat.

American attitude in general. A lot of people are raising their kids to worship fast food and TV. We eat bad, we don't workout, and when we get fat we want to blame the fast food restaurants. I feel sorry for the kids today. Someone needs to be teaching them better.

I think it has to do with everything being automated and everyone being so busy. There's a McDonald's on every corner, and parents are busy working two jobs and don't have time to cook... not to mention all the foot additives and nasty stuff they are promoting to the kids, via television.

Too much tv and video games. Too much processed food. Not enough "chores." Get the kids out there playing "real" games with eachother, and make sure they eat "real" meals. Give them some responsiblities like cleaning their rooms every day, and watch them stay slim.

I think it all started when Pong came out. Kids discovered that they could play inside without getting in trouble, and parents discovered that their kids would be quiet as long as they sat in front of the glowing box. It snowballed from there.

Moms and Dads don't take the time to plan and shop for the right foods. They are looking for something quick and easy, which usually equals obesity........:)

I was talking to a cross country about this, and he said the inactivity of today's young people is causing their hearts and lungs not to develop fully as children resulting in slower and slower running times as high schoolers...
