His mommy dipped him in some magic river to make him invulnerable to arrows, spears, swords, etc. She held him by one of his heels. He died as the result of being wounded in that heel.
Hence, a person's weak spot is know as an "Achilles heel".
Don't name your kid that....at least not in an English-speaking country. He will hate that name and get constant teasing about it.

The most moving thing about Achilles is that he knowingly chose to die young as a hero who would be remembered throughout history. When Odysseus met up with Achilles in Hades, Achilles told him "I'd rather be the slave of a slave and live to a ripe old age than die early and gloriously in battle."
So, Achilles is a great story and your kid will love his name if you sell it right.
Of course, we homeschool and our kids don't even understand teasing. The few times they've run into it, they've stared at the teaser like the teaser was a dork and moved on with their lives.
Most important thing you can do for your little hero is to provide human milk on demand, mommy's arms on demand, and to never ever put your child in day care. Separation from mommy before age 5 has terrible effects, separation before one year is devastating.

Achilles is a tendon that attaches your foot to your leg and allows you to walk. In mythology Achilles was a guy who had only one weakness(his ankle, which was cut). Sounds like your setting up a self fulfilling prophesy to me.

Achilles was the son of the mortal Peleus and the Nereid Thetis. He was the mightiest of the Greeks who fought in the Trojan War, and was the hero of Homer's Iliad.

I think Achilles was a bit of a butt, myself. I mean, he was a really badass warrior, but he hid when it came time to go to war. He *cross-dressed* and pretended to be a woman in an attempt to get out of it.
Then, when it was necessary for him to give up his love-slave (Briseis was her name) for valid political reasons, he got all sulky and refused to leave his tent.
Anyway, I don't like the name. Achilles was strong, but he was also kind of a jerk.

The original meaning of this name may be a great one, but in our days now, this child will be made fun of, for say " Hey a chille come here, lol" or A choo illes ( like a neeze ) kids will come up with many names to make fun of this for. Or if you really like the name, name your child that but give he/she a normal name for a middle name so that they can choose later in life what they want to be called. And also in school as well. I named my daughter T'Kyah ( Tah Ki (k eye) ah but then gave her the middle name Emma Leigh, so she can go by whichever name she chooses, and I call her by both names now so she hears them and gets use to them. But then again I love unusual names, I grew up wishing I had a different and unusual name myself, so it all depends on the child, and frankly you wont know this one til after they are born and you live with them for a while. So if you really love the name do it, if your skeptical, its probably not the right one to name them, if so give them a normal middle name. Good Luck!

Achillies, the central hero of Homer's Illiad, the Greeks greatest warrior at Troy, King of Phithia and son of Peleus and Thetis. Achillies kills the Trojan hero Hektor in revenge for the death of his friend Patroclus, and eventually dies himself at the hands of Paris ( Alexander). I think its a great name.

I think it is a name from mythology, like the name of a Greek god or something. It doesn't sound like a good name, it doesn't fit our time period.
