A mule is the offspring of a horse and donkey. A donkey is smaller than a mule and has large ears. The mule is usually the size of the horse that the donkey bred. They were used on farms for plowing and work before tractors, some people still use them today. Donkeys are small and sure footed and are used to haul people and heavy loads on their back, also they will work longer than a mule. Ever heard stubborn as a mule? When a mule has decided that he has done enough work, he will not do any more!!!

In response to a previous question - yes, a mule is the offspring of a female horse and a male donkey. If it is the offspring of a female donkey and a male horse, it is known as a "hinny". Hinnies tend to be more horse like in appearance, and do not have the stamina or strength that a mule posesses.

A mule is the offspring of a donkey and a horse. They're usually sterile. That's why breeding two species that are just similar enough to produce offspring, like a military macaw and a hyacinth macaw, produces sterile "mules". They're genetically fragile.

Some scientists theorize that chimpanzees and humans could produce a "mule", though obviously nobody is willing to publicly trespass into that territory. In some finches and parakeets, the hybrid babies become exceptions to the sterility rule, and create new subspecies: it's part of how evolution works. And of course, every now and then, probability even creates exceptions in the fertility of hybrids that are usually mules.
