C is for CBS
W is for Warner
the two corporate owners of the new network.
C had to come first -- you do the math -- ha-ha.
But what does it stand for? is a more interesting question - the CW combines UPN and WB taken from the old line studios United Paramount and Warner Bros that formed them. UPN had a predominantly urban contemporary focus whilst WB focused on a predominantly young female and essentially suburban audience. Apparently the fall schedule programs Sunday night towards its urban audience with typical UPN fare and the rest of the week at its youth audience with mostly WB type hourly drama programming -- Americas Top Model crossing both audiences.
The loser in the combination seems to be laughter and innovation. Gone are all the old WB comedies ... and the UPN comedies have been pared down to just the cream of the crop.
It will be interesting to see in the fullness of time if this station truly integrates its audiences together and makes this format work or loses one or the other of its audiences.
As for me -- CW stands for Can't Watch.
I used to watch a lot of the scifi featured on both networks -- UPN and WB's Tribune Company forerunner. (At one time scifi shows were the studios premier and flagship programs), but as the urban and youth programming formed significant audiences they took over the network's programming focuses and from a marketing perspective rightly so. Even the "branded" scifi franchises became fish out of water and long since all fallen off the schedule without replacement.
