The current record is 8 minutes, 58 seconds. When humans go under water, they automatically hold their breaths longer than they are able to do on land because of a survival instinct called "mammilian diving reflex ". During this oxygen saving mode, the body saves itself by slowing the heart rate and shunting blood to the body's core.

It depends on the condition of the person's lungs. If they have bad lungs, probably for a short amount of time. If their lungs are in good condition, then they can probably hold their breath for a pretty decent amount of time.

I've heard the Navy SEALS in training have to be able to hold their breath underwater for 10 minutes in order to graduate.
