IF it is, it is only metaphorical... An idea of being able to cheat life and death, to be a creator, be better than God, make sb dependant on you... And - the unexpected consequences....

She wrote it because of a bet or a contest with her husband and another poet while wintering in Italy. They were to write a scary novel. She won.
