I am not sure I follow your question, but we, the viewers are Private Ryan. All those soldiers gave their lives to save us. There is a fantastic scene when Tom Hanks tells Tom Sizemore that Ryan better find a cure for cancer or invent the longer lasting light bulb. Bascially Spielberg is telling us to life to fullest and take advantage of what past generations sacfraficed to give us.

The director is merely trying to explain to his viewers how terribly brutal the war was. Tom Hanks moves around a lot, and while he's walking along, dodging bullets, the director shows his audience people dying and getting their arms blown off and such, like it became something so normal, Tom Hanks stopped noticing. He was trying to illustrate how quickly life can end and how it did end so horribly for the men who fought in the war. The answer to this question, really, is what YOU get from it. What does it convey or bring out to YOU? Keep that in mind when you answer this.

I doubt the director was trying to say anything ABOUT the viewer, but more TO the viewer.

I'm not much into War movies. But I would like to point out that I'm proud of our Troops past and present. Now referring to my previous post, I've been awake for 2 days and I guess I wasn't thinking clearly. originally I thought it was funny but upon reading it again found it a little offensive so I removed it and I apologize.

This sounds to me like it belongs in the category "Homework Help" and as the other answerer has said, you should try to figure this out for yourself.
