Yes it can be a great service, just be careful. Read all of their safety tips on keeping identity safe, and just make sure use commen sense, like don't ship anything out before you've recieved payment (I've heard of people doing that!). It can be a great place for buying and selling. Good luck.

I've sold about a dozen things on ebay and made some decent money from them. I would recommend buying a couple of things first, so you could see what the process is like first. I only buy and sell things on there once in awhile, but all of my experiences have been pretty good.

I have sold a lot, but it took a lot of work. There's cheats and liars left and right eager to rip you off.

You need to roam the areas that list stuff that you would like to sell, so you can see the negative feedbacks and spot trends with cheaters. There is an extension for Firefox that allows you to pull all of the negatives for a specific user, it is priceless.

Be careful on how you take payments. Pay Pal works fine but will give the benefit of the doubt to the seller. Also, do NOT use Pay Pal as a bank. As soon as you know that you don't need the money, push it to your bank account. Pay Pal can freeze your account but not your bank account.

You can get a real credit card handling account for $50 at 2checkout.com, I have used them for my hosting side business (http://gopedro.net) for two years and I am yet to have trouble with them. 2CO sends me a full deposit at any time I have more than $10 worth of cleared credit card transactions sitting in my account.

Always insure. Always insure. Don't try to save the buck, just buy the stupid insurance. It will save you a lot of grief.

Don't do shipping gouging, it is childish and stupid. Shipping gouging is when you sell something that is worth $20 for $1 and then charge $25 for shipping and handling, since in theory "handling" can cost whatever it is you say. I have a long time policy of announcing the priority mail cost with the auction, and it is not negotiable. If you agree to buy my thing, I will charge you exactly what it is going to cost me to ship it to you. I won't charge you for the handling since I use the boxes I get for free at the post office.

I've bought and sold a large number of things on Ebay. If you're careful at it, you can do really well for yourself. But, BE CAREFUL!
